Meglio il PC o lo smartphonePC or smartphone?

Oggi molti, almeno nella loro vita privata, usano lo smartphone piuttosto che il computer come dispositivo preferito. Un mio alunno una volta (sarà stato il 2015 più o meno) mi disse che da quando aveva scoperto che tutto quello che poteva fare col PC, lo poteva fare (anche) con lo smartphone, aveva rinunciato al PC.

In realtà le cose non stanno così. Almeno a mio parere. E spiego perché.

  1. anzitutto lo schermo dello smartphone è decisamente più piccolo di quello che può avere un computer. Quindi si vede meno bene. Per vedere un dettaglio, per esempio, bisogna zoomare su tale dettaglio, ma allora si perde la visione d'insieme. Per non parlare della impossibilità di avere più finestre di applicazioni aperte contemporaneamente, o più finestre della stessa applicazione aperte contemporaneamente. Quest'ultima cosa è utile se si vogliono comparare i files di due cartelle (o sullo stesso dispositivo o tra un dispositivo e un altro, remoto)

  2. Analogamente immettere e gestire dei dati testuali su uno smartphone è molto più problematico che farlo se si hanno a disposizione una vera tastiera e un mouse.

    1. Si pensi solo all'utilità del tasto destro del mouse (ovviamente non presente su un mobile).
    2. O si pensi alle combinazioni di tasti (le scorciatoie da tastiera), che si possono usare su un computer, ma non su un dispositivo mobile. Con ctrl+s io sto salvando questo file che ho sul PC. Cosa che su uno smartphone non potrei fare.
    3. Per non parlare della difficoltà di selezionare il testo con le dita (come si è costretti a fare su uno smartphone): che guerre occorre sostenere! Quanto tempo si può perdere perché la selezione corrisponda al testo che uno vuole selezionare, e non slitti un po' su o un po' giù.
    4. Se poi dalla videoscrittura passiamo ai fogli di calcolo e ai database la differenza tra PC e smartphone diventa abissale: come si fa a gestire un foglio di calcolo su smartphone? Come creare grafici dai dati di un foglio di calcolo? E come gestire un database usando mysql e php? Mi pare praticamente impossibile. Eppure si tratta del modo più intelligente e flessibile di usare dei database. Al limite uno può ricorrere alla gabbia dorata di qualche applicazione che non permette di sapere che cosa stai facendo e ti costringe a usare un formato proprietario che tra qualche tempo non esisterà più. E i tuoi dati andranno persi.
    5. E anche per l'elaborazione di audio, immagini e video non si può nemmeno lontanamente paragonare quello che si può fare con lo smartphone rispetto a quello che si può fare con un PC. Ancora una volta: lo smartphone è una gabbia dorata, che ti costringe a stare in un recinto molto piccolo, e non ti permette di controllare ciò che stai facendo e di decidere tu come acquisire, modificare e organizzare i tuoi dati.
    6. Organizzare i files, e decidere quali sincronizzare su quali altri dispositivi è qualcosa che si può fare molto meglio e molto di più con un PC che con un mobile. Quest'ultimo, tra l'altro, ti lascia vedere e modificare solo una ristretta parte di quanto vi si trova dentro. A meno che uno "rooti" il suo dispositivo. Cosa questa tutt'altro che facile. E tutt'altro che sicura.

  3. Ma poi c'è un altro importante, inestimabile vantaggio del computer rispetto allo smartphone: la privacy. Con un PC, anche connesso a internet, se usate Linux, potete garantirvi un elevato livello di privacy. Perché potete controllare voi che cosa fa la macchina, e farle fare solo ciò che voi volete. Uno smartphone fa quello che volete voi, e solo quello? Intanto sa molto di voi: sa dove siete e dove siete stati (se è attiva la geolocalizzazione), sa con chi parlate, chi frequentate, che cosa scrivete sui social e non è detto che magari non registri quello che dite e lo trasmetta ad altri, senza che voi ne siate al corrente (questo, almeno, come possibilità, non come regola).

Today, many people, at least in their personal lives, use smartphones rather than computers as their preferred device. A student of mine, once (it must have been 2015 more or less) told me that since he had discovered that everything he could do with the PC, he could do (also) with the smartphone, he had given up the PC.

In reality, things are not like that. At least in my opinion. And I explain why.

  1. first of all, the screen of the smartphone is definitely smaller than what a computer can have. So you can see less well. To see a detail, for example, you have to zoom in on that detail, but then you lose the overall view. Not to mention the inability to have multiple application windows open at the same time, or multiple windows of the same application open at the same time. The latter is useful if you want to compare files from two folders (either on the same device or between one device and another, remote)
  2. Similarly entering and managing text data on a smartphone is much more problematic than doing so if you have a real keyboard and mouse.
    1. Just think of the usefulness of the right mouse button (obviously not present on a mobile).
    2. Or think about key combinations (the keyboard shortcuts), which you can use on a computer, but not on a mobile device. With ctrl+s I am saving this file that I have on my PC. Which on a smartphone I could not do.
    3. Not to mention the difficulty of selecting text with one's fingers (as one is forced to do on a smartphone): what wars one must endure! How much time can be wasted for the selection to match the text one wants to select, and not slip up or down a bit.
    4. If we then move from word processing to spreadsheets and databases the difference between PCs and smartphones becomes abysmal: how do you manage a spreadsheet on a smartphone? How to create charts from spreadsheet data? And how to manage a database using mysql and php? That seems virtually impossible. Yet it is the smartest and most flexible way to use databases. At the limit one can resort to the gilded cage of some application that does not allow you to know what you are doing and forces you to use a proprietary format that will no longer exist in some time. And your data will be lost.
    5. And even for processing audio, images and video you can't even remotely compare what you can do with the smartphone versus what you can do with a PC. Again: the smartphone is a golded cage, forcing you into a very small enclosure, and not allowing you to control what you are doing and to decide for yourself how to capture, edit, and organize your data.
    6. Organizing files, and deciding which ones to sync to which other devices is something you can do much better and much more with a PC than with a mobile. The latter, by the way, lets you see and edit only a small part of what is in it. Unless one "roots" one's device. Which this is far from easy. And far from secure.
  3. But then there is another important, invaluable advantage of the computer over the smartphone: privacy. With a PC, even one connected to the Internet, if you use Linux, you can guarantee yourself a high level of privacy. Because you can control what the machine does, and make it do only what you want it to do. Does a smartphone do what you want it to do, and only that? First of all, it knows a lot about you: it knows where you are and where you have been (if geolocation is enabled), it knows who you talk to, who you hang out with, what you write on social media, and it could possibly even record what you say and pass it on to others, without your knowledge (this, at least, as a possibility, not a rule).
